  2. “Take heart!” Read the following verses : Deut 31:6 ; John 16:33; 1 John 3:1. Paul starts the passage with a doxology, addressing God as “Father (or Source) of compassion” and “God of all comfort” (verse 3). What does that name mean to you?

  3. Notice what Paul says about sharing in suffering. What are God’s purposes behind allowing suffering? (See also 1 Corinthians 10:13)

  4. What hope and comfort does Paul turn to in the midst of suffering?

  5. Paul asks the Corinthians to “help us by your prayers,” so that “many will give thanks…in answer to the prayers of many” (Verse 11). What are some steps we can take to do this better as a community?

Weekly Spiritual Practice

Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 every day this week paying attention to the comfort of God

  1. Make a list of 3 things how God has comforted you and how you need his comfort

  2. Bring people to mind who need comfort. Pray for them and plan how YOU can comfort them

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
— 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
