The New Age of The Spirit
(II Cor 3 : 1-18)

Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

—2 Corinthians 3:4-6

Discussion Question

  1. Think of a habit you are trying hard to shake or take up. What is making it hard?

  2. Read verses 3-6. What does Paul and Timothy say they rely on to ensure competent results in their ministry to the Corinthians?

  3. Compare what Paul says about the “chalk” work of the law to the “Sharpie” work of the Holy Spirit (verses 7-16). Whawhat are examples of things in our lives that are the work of the law and the work of the Spirit?

  4. Verses 16-18 promises clarity, freedom, and increasing transformation into Christ-likeness through the work fo the Holy Spirit. What is our role in this work?

  5. Consider and Share. Consider: How have you been transformed by the Spirit in the past year? Share: What will be your prayer for transformation during this Lent season? (See some examples by Mark Anderson below.)

Prayer for TransFORMATION

(by Mark Anderson)

Lord Jesus, I need you. Lord, I open my heart to you. Please come in to heal me and change me. Transform me in this area of my life:

[Name specifics here. The following are examples.]

Lord, please come and give me your hope, your freedom, your compassion for others. I ask for this change in my heart.

Lord, please come and remind me that I am your beloved child, and I do not need to be anxious because your perfect love casts out all fear.

Lord, please remind me of how much you have forgiven me, so that I can find forgiveness in me for [this person].

Lord, please come and heal this addiction. I can’t manage it. I am done. I am asking you to do in me what I cannot do for myself. Change my heart, and lead me to the community and the resources to make real this recovery that I am longing for.

Lord I need you. Please come and heal me, transform me. [I claim in faith that my prayer of invitation for the Lord to work in my heart will not go unanswered].

In Christ Jesus’ name I pray.

Amen
